Snow Monkeys, Zenko-ji Temple and Sake Day Trip from Nagano
Starts at: Nagano Station or Hakuba
The best-known tour to the bathing monkeys of Jigokudani starts at Nagano Station, not in Tokyo. Here you see where every bookable tour begins, how long the road takes and what is included, from the coach out of Shinjuku to a private car from your hotel.
Pick the day you want to see the monkeys, or the first and last day of your trip. We look at the booking calendar of every tour from Tokyo, Nagano and the ski resorts and list the ones that still take bookings.

Where you sleep the night before decides most of the day. From Tokyo it is a long trip either way; from Nagano or the ski resorts it is a short one.
No train to organise. You leave Shinjuku in the morning and come back in the evening, with up to three and a half hours on the road each way.
The bullet train gets you to Nagano Station far faster than the coach. The group tours start there and add Zenko-ji, sake or Obuse.
A driver collects you at the hotel, and the price covers the whole car. With four or five people this is the most flexible way to go.
Tours that start in Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen or the Yudanaka valley, for people who are already staying in the mountains.
One tour per starting point or travel style. Every tour, with its start, ticket and lunch, is in the table further down.
The most-reviewed snow monkey tour on this site. It adds Zenko-ji temple, a sake tasting and lunch to the park. It starts at Nagano Station, so from Tokyo you take the Shinkansen yourself.
Leaves from the LOVE sculpture in Shinjuku and ends in Shinjuku, with a sukiyaki lunch on the way. Expect up to three and a half hours on the coach in each direction.
A van for up to five people from Tokyo, with Zenko-ji, Shibu Onsen, Obuse and Matsushiro on the itinerary. One price for the whole group.
About four hours from Nagano, Iiyama or Yudanaka: the park, a soba lunch and a bath in Shibu Onsen. Made for a night in the valley.
Two questions: where you start and what kind of day you want. The answer comes from the listings of the tours on this site.
Question 1 of 2

Starts at Nagano Station and adds snow play in Shiga Kogen to the park.
A private day in Nagano by Japan Awaits. Pickup and stops are on the booking page.

Taken from the tour listings, checked in November 2026. The length of the whole day is the operator's figure.
The monkeys come to the park all year because they are fed there every day. Snow and full pools are a winter thing.
| Period | At the park | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-November to mid-December | First snow, which usually melts again quickly | Mating season into December: monkeys may come later or stay in the mountains. |
| Mid-December to March | Firm snow, most in January and February; the monkeys bathe most often now | The forest path is icy. Late January to late February the H.I.S. coach adds the Kamakura snow huts in Iiyama on selected dates. |
| April | The snow melts | From 4 April to 19 June 2027 Zenko-ji holds its Gokaicho, a ceremony held every seven years. Expect busy roads, trains and hotels in Nagano. |
| Late April to late June | No snow | Baby monkeys are born. |
| July to October | No snow; the pool is often empty for long stretches | The monkeys still come to feed. October starts the mating season again. |
The park opens daily, from 9:00 to 16:00 between November and March and from 8:30 to 17:00 between April and October. It rarely closes, and then for typhoons, blizzards or earthquakes. The park month by month.
On a coach day from Tokyo you get back to Shinjuku in the evening, tired and cold, so leave anything with a fixed start time for another night. A sumo show or tournament in Tokyo and a guided food tour in Tokyo work better on a different day. Winter is also the clearest season for the other big day out from the capital, the day trip to Mt Fuji. Travelling on through the Japanese Alps? From Nagano the Hokuriku Shinkansen continues towards Kanazawa, the usual base for a day trip to the thatched village of Shirakawa-go.
Plenty of people book a "snow monkey tour" in Tokyo and only later notice that it begins at Nagano Station. We put the bookable tours side by side with the details that decide the day: where they start, how they get you there, the time at the park and what you pay on top. Every fact comes from the tour listing, and where a listing is silent we say so. If you book through a link here, the platform pays us a commission from its margin, and your price stays the same.
The critical voices here describe an autumn day at the park without a single monkey and a coach day from Shinjuku that ran far longer than expected. Both are typical rather than bad luck with one operator: in October and November the monkeys often stay in the forest for the mating season, and the road from Tokyo takes up to three and a half hours each way. The month and the start point decide more than the tour you pick.
“Spectacular full day tour. Amazing time spent with the snow monkeys. … Beautiful scenery and a pleasant walk through the forest up to the snow monkey thermal spring area. We saw at least 100 monkeys including very cute baby monkeys, Our guide was very friendly, engaging and knowledgeable, and gave us clear instruction. Transport was very comfortable . Lunch was delicious …”
“We loved our experience! Despite some peaks of heavy snow (late December season), it was really fun and interesting. The time allowed to stay in the park was way too short for us. We had to rush a lot, scared to miss the bus. …”
“We had a fantastic experience. The snow monkeys and the Zenko-ji Temple were highlights of our Japan trip so far. Our driver and guide were great! We rode in comfort and appreciated the breaks. …”
“A very long day and in the end we didn't see a single monkey. The sake tasting was interesting, lunch delicious and the guide nice. But the risk is too great of tying up a whole day without knowing in advance whether there will be monkeys or not. …”
“Everything was perfect, the guide as well as the organisation in general. The monkeys are fascinating, the snow houses surprising, the meal very good. But more than 13 hours in total spoils a substantial part of the pleasure.”
Real traveller reviews from GetYourGuide.
For most visitors, the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano and the group tour by Machinovate Japan from Nagano Station. It adds Zenko-ji temple, a sake tasting and lunch to the monkey park and is the most-reviewed snow monkey tour on this site. The train ticket is not included. If you would rather not organise the train, the H.I.S. coach from Shinjuku takes you there and back, at the cost of a long day on the road. With four or five people, a private van from Tokyo is the most flexible choice.
Yes. A coach tour from Shinjuku needs up to three and a half hours each way and is back in Tokyo in the evening. The Shinkansen to Nagano takes about 80 minutes, and group tours start at Nagano Station. A private car or van picks you up at your hotel in Tokyo, and there is also a private tour that travels by Shinkansen with a guide.
From about mid-December to March. Snow lies at the park from roughly the middle of December, January and February have the most, and the monkeys bathe most often in this period. The first snow in November usually melts again quickly, and the snow is gone by April.
No. The Japanese macaques at Jigokudani are wild, even though they come down for food every day. In winter they bathe most often, frequently many at once, but no tour can promise how many will be in the pool on your day. In October and November, the mating season, they may arrive later or stay in the forest. The H.I.S. coach tour, for example, does not refund if no monkeys appear.
About 1.6 kilometres on a forest path from Kanbayashi Onsen, mostly flat, with a short climb at the start and steep steps at the park entrance. In winter allow 30 to 40 minutes each way. The path is packed snow and ice from December to March, so wear snow boots or ice spikes. Prams and wheelchairs cannot use it, and no vehicle drives up to the park.
No. Tours that start at Nagano Station or in the ski resorts do not include the train from Tokyo. Book the Shinkansen to Nagano separately and plan your return for after the tour has ended in the late afternoon.
It depends on the tour. The listings of the H.I.S. coach from Shinjuku and the Machinovate tour from Nagano include it. On the private car tour by Luxurious Travel Master entrance fees are extra, and for most other tours the listing does not say, so check the inclusions before you book. In winter, tickets may need to be reserved for a time slot; check before you go.
Warm layers, gloves, a hat and shoes with grip. Temperatures in winter can drop to around minus ten degrees, and the forest path is icy. The H.I.S. coach sells ice spikes on board. Large suitcases are not allowed on the path.
The current prices are in the comparison table on this page. Coach tours from Tokyo and the group tours from Nagano are priced per person, private cars per vehicle. The private tour by Shinkansen is the most expensive way to go.
Start point, way from Tokyo, park ticket and lunch for each tour.
